Karl Stengel at Palazzo Loredan, Venice

24 March – 30 April 2016
Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti
Campo Santo Stefano, Venice
From 24 March to 30 April about forty works by Karl Stengel will be on display at Palazzo Loredan, the historic premises of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti (The Venetian Institute of the Sciences, Humanities and Arts) since 1891.

Acrylics on canvas, drawings and pastels on paper and several mixed-media works, document the recent artistic journey of the Hungarian master. The characteristic figure emerges from Stengel’s drawings and pastels on paper, casting a shadow on the symbolical plain or coloured paper, which is reminiscent of theatre wings. The figure is also reduced to become a paper silhouette, cut out and pasted on painted backgrounds, like a child’s cut-out figures from a newspaper.  Stengel’s art interchanges between figuration to abstraction, seen in particular in the larger, mixed technique paintings where pure colour prevails, in a joyful absolute, formal freedom.

Opening hours: 10am – 6pm every day
